Sure, spider veins and varicose veins make you feel uncomfortable about your skin’s appearance, but they may indicate a more serious problem. At the Vein Clinics of Hawaii, Randall Juleff, MD, FACS, evaluates your condition to determine if you may have venous insufficiency, a vein condition that leads to pressure and expansion of your veins and causes blood to pool in your lower limbs. Vein Clinics of Hawaii has seven locations, in Honolulu, Lihue, Wailuku, Hilo, Kapolei, Kamuela, and Hawaii. To learn more about venous insufficiency, contact the closest office by phone or use the online booking system to schedule your consultation.

What causes venous insufficiency?
Multiple factors contribute to venous insufficiency. In some cases, vein disorders have a hereditary link. Those who have immediate family members with varicose veins or blood-clotting conditions are more likely to develop venous insufficiency.
When you injure your leg, the trauma may lead to inflammation that can cause venous insufficiency, although it may not develop right away.
Hormone medications, such as birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy, can also affect the health and function of your veins. Other hormonal fluctuations, such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, can influence the development of varicose veins and venous insufficiency.
Venous insufficiency can also result when you spend prolonged periods of time standing, and people in certain occupations have a higher risk of developing the condition, including nurses, hairstylists, and flight attendants.
How do you treat venous insufficiency?
The severity of your venous insufficiency and how it affects your life determines how Dr. Juleff treats it. After a thorough exam and evaluation, which may include a diagnostic ultrasound to monitor your blood flow, he discusses your options.
In some cases, lifestyle changes may improve your condition. Wearing compression stockings, getting daily exercise, and improving your diet is enough to reduce minor symptoms.
If your symptoms are more severe, Dr. Juleff may recommend an endovenous ablation. Using radiofrequency technology, he heats your troublesome veins to a temperature that makes them collapse. Your body naturally reroutes the blood via other veins, and over time your varicose veins and spider veins fade, as do the symptoms they create.
When varicose veins and venous insufficiency start affecting how your legs feel, find a solution at the Vein Clinics of Hawaii. Call one of Dr. Juleff’s seven offices today or go online to schedule your initial consultation.
